Dr. Hiromitsu Shirakawa
Electrotechnical Laboratory
Nagata-Cho Chiyoda-u
Tokyo, Japan

Dear Dr. Shirakawa:

\JI am enclosing a listing of the on-line manual for the editor program ETV
which is the best that I can do toward meeting the request in your letter
of recent date.

This is, of course, only an operating manual and it does not explain how the
editor works. I am also afraid that it assumes a familiarity with our
computer system and the associated operating system that people at other
locations can not be expected to know.

This program has been under development for some time and it is even now
being changed almost daily. You may therefore find some inconsistancies
in the explanations. In its present embodiment it is written entirely in
the assembly language for the PDP-10 computer. Unfortunately, this program
is not well documented although an attempt is currently under way to
rectify the situation.

The program, as loaded, is split into two portions. One portion is
shared by all users and occupies 25 K words of storage. The other
portion, loaded separately for each user, occupies a minimum of 4 K
words and is automatically expanded as required by the size of the
page that is currently being viewed, with the usual size being of the
order of 6 K. Simple tasks, such as writing this letter, seldom take
more than 5 K.

Arthur L. Samuel
